Food security
🍽️ Malnutrition in the DRC: a silent emergency
Malnutrition remains one of the most pressing health and humanitarian challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in rural areas. Deprived of access to a diverse, balanced, and sufficient diet, millions of families live in chronic food insecurity.
According to UNICEF data (2022), nearly 70% of Congolese children suffer from acute malnutrition, a condition that severely compromises their physical and cognitive development. This is compounded by the lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure, making the treatment of malnutrition cases even more difficult.
🌱 EBaM: an agricultural response to a nutritional scourge
Faced with this alarming situation, EBaM (Together for the Well-being and Autonomy of the Masses) launched the "Agriculture for All" project, an initiative that aims to guarantee sustainable, sufficient and nutritious food for orphans and the most vulnerable families.
EBaM's approach is based on several pillars:
- Local production of varied foodstuffs, rich in essential nutrients (cereals, legumes, vegetables, fruits, etc.).
- Nutritional education for widows and guardians, to enable them to better understand children's nutritional needs and good cooking practices.
- The creation of community and family gardens, to strengthen food self-sufficiency at the household level.
🎯 A colossal challenge, a targeted response
The challenge is immense, both in terms of the size of the territory and the depth of the needs. However, EBaM has already laid the first stones of this transformation by implementing pilot programs in certain areas affected by conflict and extreme poverty.
These actions have enabled hundreds of orphans to benefit from a regular and balanced diet, thus reducing the risks of severe malnutrition and improving their overall health.
⚠️ A real impact, but still limited
It is important to emphasize that, despite its determination, EBaM remains limited by its human, logistical, and financial resources. The organization currently works with a small sample of beneficiaries, while the needs extend to thousands of children and families across the country.
🌍 A call for solidarity
To broaden its impact, EBaM is calling on technical and financial partners, NGOs, public and private institutions, and engaged citizens. Together, it is possible to reverse the trend of malnutrition in the DRC by focusing on community agriculture, nutrition education, and human solidarity.
